You just can’t beat the weather we have had here the past two weekends. Temps have been in the 60s and 70s both weekends with plenty of sunshine, and plenty of wind. Luckily, the winds died down a bit on Saturday for the second weekend of the Spring Fling Criterium Series.
Steve Tilford has a good write-up of the 1/2/3 race over on his BLOG . The race was fast, Shadd Smith took top honors followed up by Garrick Valverde and John Frey.
Women’s fields are noticeably larger this year, a good sign for area cycling. The women’s 1/2/3 race had 15 women, a good number of women for an early season area race considering we have seen races in previous years with fewer women than we had fingers on one hand to count them. Suzie Goebel, down from Souix Falls, SD, took the win. It was especially impressive considering she had taken 9th in a fast men’s 35+ field and jumped into the 3/4 men’s race as well, only pulling out after breaking a spoke mid-race.
Category 3/4 Race Video
The men’s 3/4 race has some great numbers this year, over 40 on Saturday. Mark DeBoer has a nice write-up about the race over at Prologue Racing. Mark took 2nd to William Smith, who barely edged Mark out at the line in a photo finish. 3/4 racing is fast this year, a good sign for the 1/2 field, assuming these riders start upgrading throughout the season, adding to the upper ranks of area racing.
Roger Harrison was on hand, taking some great pictures of the day’s racing action. We also have a few photos of our own.
