The first Spring Fling of the 2016 season is behind us now and what a weekend it was. Midwest weather is fickle, you never know what you are going to get; it could be in the 80s or it could be 20 below zero. Luckily, the first race of the are road season brought with it a nice warm-up over the weekend. Temperatures quickly warmed up, after a cool start, into the 60s and eventually into the 70s.
All fields had pretty good participation with some large field sizes in the masters races as well as the 3/4, 4/5, and 1/2/3 events. The women’s field saw some good numbers too which is a good sign for area women’s racing.
For this early in the season, racing was fast, which might be a testament to the milder winter we experienced this year. Those who were on the bikes in the off-season, pushed the pace while those who spent the winter hibernating were left sucking wind on the back of the pack or dropped of the back to suffer alone.
The winds picked up throughout the day, each race battled stiffer winds than those before it with the strongest winds buffeting the 1/2/3 race at the end of the day.
Racing resumes this weekend with the second race of the series. Once again the forecast shows unseasonably warm temperatures.
